
Course Content:
Introduction to Allergic Diseases, Atopic Dermatitis, Allergic Rhinitis, Asthma, Urticaria and Angioedema, Anaphylaxis, Basic and Practical Allergy.
Learning Outcomes:
- Know the differences between toxic reactions and hypersensitivities, allergies and intolerances
- Describe the 4 principals of management of allergic conditions
- Be able to take an allergy-focused history
- Describe the symptoms and signs of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis
- Describe environmental measures that can assist in the management of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis
- Devise a treatment plan for allergic rhinoconjunctivitis
- Categorize a patient based on the severity and frequency of symptoms
- Educate a patient on how to use nasal sprays
- Describe the symptoms and signs of asthma
- Categorize untreated asthma by symptom severity
- Determine a stepwise approach to the treatment of chronic asthma in preschool children, children older than 5 years, older children and adults
- Demonstrate the use of a spacer with tidal breathing and the single-breath technique
- Recognize atopic dermatitis (acute, subacute and chronic) and its pattern of distribution in various age groups
- Differentiate atopic dermatitis from other paediatric rashes that itch
- Develop a treatment plan for atopic dermatitis
- Instruct a parent/ patient on the application of emollients and topical steroids
- Describe and identify urticaria and angioedema
- List causes and triggers of acute and chronic urticaria
- Describe the management of a patient with chronic spontaneous urticaria
- Identify important triggers of anaphylaxis
- Describe the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis
- Describe the treatment of an anaphylactic reaction
- Provide instruction on the use of an adrenaline auto-injector
